Tibet overland tour is for those who prefer to witness the sights by driving around. On the way, you will discover the real Tibet – where ancient villages and settlements exist with bustling old cities. You also get to observe Tibetan lifestyle closely.

Tibet overland tour is the tour which connects two old capital cities, Lhasa in Tibet & Kathmandu in Nepal. The trip begins at Lhasa & ends in the city of temples – Kathmandu.

Tibet is a place worth visiting as it holds the magnificent mountain scenery & enormous cultural heritage. As you pass through the Tibetan plateau, our local Tibetan local guides will guide you through all the Tibetan monasteries, monuments, temples and precious tourist sites. Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery, busy Barkhor Square, Sera Monastery & Norbulingka are the places you will be visiting at Lasha.

You’ll leave Lhasa on either 4WD or a luxury van; you will be driving through past picturesque Tibetan settlements where nomadic herdsmen can be seen wandering across the broad arid plateau. Throughout your journey, you will pass through several high mountain passes with spectacular mountain views, including some majestic peaks like Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu & Shishapangma. Your adventure continues to the historic cities of Shigatse and Gyantse. You’ll get an insight into the Tibetan culture and history as you’ll keep exploring the ancient monasteries, forts and citadels. After leaving Zhangmu, you’ll cross the Friendship Bridge which lets you enter Nepal. Reaching Kathmandu will bring an end to your Overland Tour.

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 1:Arrive Lhasa (3660 m)

    Our Tibetan guide will reach to receive you at the Gonggar Airport. You’ll drive to Lhasa (3560 meters) right after completing your immigration formalities. Next, you’ll check in to the hotel where you get some time to take rest. You’ll need to drink plenty of fluids as your body needs to get used to with the Lhasa’s high altitude. Note: No any programs are arranged on the day as you need to take some rest.

  • Day 2:Sightseeing in Lhasa

    Early morning, you’ll have the breakfast, and the guide will let you know the whole day’s activity. An expert local guide will instruct you on tour to Sera Monastery, Norbulingka and the Barkhor Square. Sera Monastery is the place where you’ll get to know about the different aspects of Tibetan Buddhism. Then after, you pay a visit to Norbulingka, the summer retreat of the Dalai Lama. The Norbulingka building completed in 1956 and the handsome building is decorated ornately with Tibetan carvings and paintings. Not only that, you’ll explore more cultures of Tibet in the Jokhang Temple. Your last visit for the day, but not least is the Barkhor Square which is also the nerve center of Lhasa. In the evening, the guide will escort you back to the hotel.

  • Day 3:Sightseeing in Lhasa

    After you have your breakfast in the morning, your guide will escort you to the majestic Potala Palace. The monumental structure of the Potala Palace dominates the beautiful landscape of Lhasa. As you start observing the palace, you’ll get to see the Tibetan art at it’s best. The elegant Palace consists of an immense array of intricate Tibetan murals and decorative statues. Also, you’ll get to see the see the tombs of the eight Dalai Lamas.

    Then after, you will visit the beautifully landscaped Drepung Monastery. The monastery is the place where we get to see the nuns and the monks chanting and performing religious discourses. Then after, you’ll return to the hotel for a well-earned rest. Note: Since only a limited number of visitors are allowed to visit Potala Palace every day, the order of sightseeing places will be decided by your guide.

  • Day 4:Drive to Gyantse (3950m)

    Following Friendship Highway, you drive past Khamba La at 4794 m with a brief halt to savour majestic views of Yamdrok-Tso Lake and Nazin Kang Sa standing proudly at 7252m. On turning westwards, you come across another Karo La pass at 5045 m. On the way, you can see the glimpse of huge glaciers tumbling down into the road. Driving for 261 kilometers will take you to the town of Gyantse, and the magnificently landscaped Tibetan villages become visible.

  • Day 5:Sightseeing & drive to Shigatse (3,900m) 90km

    Gyantse prides on Gyantse Dzong and Kumbum. Gyantse Dzong is a historic fort which was built in the 14th century and commands a mesmerizing view of the entire Gyantse and circling Nyang Chu Valley. Talking about Kumbum, it has significant gold-domed stupa, houses, several chapels and the Tibetan Buddhist murals. Right after exploring Gyantse, you will go on a 90 km drive to Shigatse, which is at an altitude of 3900 meters. Shigatse is another largest city in Tibet. Here in Shigatse, Tashilhunpo Monastery is one of the largest functioning monasteries, and people consider it as the primary attraction of Shigatse.

  • Day 6:Sightseeing & Drive to Shegar (4,050m) 244 km.

    The sixth day will let you traverse along the Friendship Highway amidst picturesque scenery driving through the small town of Lhatse, and Gyamtso La Pass at an altitude of 5220m. A lot of monasteries and camps of nomadic herders come to sight as the route to Shegar opens into the plains.

  • Day 7:Drive to Zhangmu (2,300m) 181 km

    Lalung La Pass at 5,214 meters and Shung La Pass are the passes, which you’ll be crossing today. The descending drive from the Tibetan Plateau to verdant Zhangmu on the Nepalese border will savour the enchanting views of the circling peaks of Shishapangma, Cho Oyu, Menlungtse and Gauri Shankar. After a drive for 181 km, you’ll find yourself amidst the lush and verdant vegetation of Zhangmu at the height of 2,300 meters

  • Day 8:Drive to Kathmandu (1,400m) 123 km

    Few kilometers drive away from Zhangmu to Friendship Bridge across Bhote Koshi River brings you closer to Immigration Control in Kodari where you will say goodbye to your Tibetan guide and the driver, and walk across the river and meet your Nepalese escort who will then take you through the remaining part of the journey. After driving for 5 hours and 123 km, you’ll finally arrive in the capital city of Nepal; Kathmandu.
